Shaker vs. Slab vs. Glass: Choosing a Cabinet Door Style for Your Home

Grey Shaker-style kitchen cabinets by 51Wood

Door style is the most visible decision in a kitchen — it is most of what you see. Here is how the three styles our clients choose most often compare in real life, not just in photos.

Shaker: the timeless default

A flat centre panel framed by clean rails and stiles. Shaker doors work in traditional, transitional and most modern homes, which is why they have outlasted every trend cycle since the 1800s. The trade-off: the inside corners of the frame collect dust and cooking film, so they take a little more effort to wipe down. Cost sits in the middle of the range.

Slab: the modern minimalist

One flat panel, no frame, no fuss. Slab doors are the easiest to clean — a single wipe — and usually the most economical to produce, especially in painted MDF, laminate or wood veneer. They suit condos and modern homes beautifully, but they are unforgiving: any wave or imperfection in the panel shows, which is why material quality matters more with slab than with any other style.

Glass-front: the display piece

A framed door with a glass centre, used for a few feature cabinets rather than a whole kitchen. Glass breaks up a long run of doors, shows off dishware, and makes small kitchens feel lighter. The honest downsides: it costs the most per door, and it demands tidy interiors — everything inside is part of the display.

Timeless vs. trendy: our honest take

We explored this in one of our recent videos: cabinets are a 15-to-20-year decision, so the door style is the wrong place to chase a two-year trend. Shaker in a neutral colour is the safest long-term bet in the GTA resale market. Slab is genuinely timeless in modern homes, not a fad. Where trends belong is in the cheap-to-change layers — hardware, lighting, stools and paint on the walls. Choose the doors for the decade, the handles for the year.
